School NERF Championships

Active Future wanted to give all children the opportunity to represent their schools in a competition and what better way to do this than in a Nerf Competition. Having trialled this across Yorkshire with amazing results we would like to get more schools across the country taking part and who knows we may even get a National Competition going.

What is it?

It is a chance for all children regardless of athletic or sporting ability to represent their school in a movement based fun competition. It is for all ages and for both boys and girls. Children will take part in a number of different types of Nerf battles to be crowned the Nerf Champions.

Active Future will send staff into the school to run in school tasters and to help select the children who will represent your school.

The games teach children to negotiate, share, come up with their own tactics, work in a team, learn good sportsmanship, build resilience and to understand that movement can be huge fun.

The Championships

Each school will be able to send two teams of 6 children to the event which will typically be held at a central secondary school. There will be a maximum of 6 schools per event. During the 2 hour event participants will accumulate points and the team with the most points will be crowned winners.

WHAT DO SCHOOL GAMES ORGANISERS SAY ABOUT THESE EVENTS:

The Nerf events held in York have been a great success at both primary and secondary level. It has been particularly successful in engaging hard to reach groups such as inactive or low resilience young people. I have spoken to pupils from these target groups, and this was their favourite event of the year. It’s helped secure friendships, build confidence and encourage pupils to step out of their comfort zone. It's great to see the least active pupils who are hard to engage, running around sweating, diving and rolling on matts with the biggest smile on their faces. It's also been really successful in engaging SEND groups. I can't recommend these events enough. We are already booked in for next year!

Thirsk School hosted an afternoon of NERF for pupils who would not necessarily get an opportunity to do PE and Sport outside of their school provision. Some students were anxious about the event but after 10 mins of being with Lizzie, they all had a positive mindset. I have never see so many red/purple faces leave the sports hall, and after an amazing afternoon, I thought that would be it. The school promoted the event on Social Media and parents and members of the local community were thrilled that this had happened.

Thirsk School will be hosting this event again for sure.
